Some frequently asked questions
Yoga for pregnancy classes have been developed for women to provide safe, effective and enjoyable exercise and help prepare for labour and birth. Classes are suitable from the second trimester (around 14 weeks) through to birth.
The following are some of the questions that are frequently asked, but if you don’t find what you are looking for, please use the contact form.
Do I need any previous experience of yoga?
No, for many women this is their first experience of yoga.
I have been practising yoga – why do I need to join a yoga for pregnancy class?
These classes have been designed for pregnant women, adapted from traditional yoga practice. Your body will be undergoing changes as you prepare for birth and you will benefit from adapting your practice during this special time.
Why do I need to wait till the second trimester?
Your body will be adapting to pregnancy and you will be advised to see how you feel and let your body adjust before joining. If you are used to exercising, feeling well and not seen as ‘high risk’ (at risk of miscarrying or have any other health concerns) then gentle stretching, walking, swimming and other activities will be fine to continue.
Do I need any equipment or clothing?
No, just comfortable clothing with a bit of stretch that you can move in. Mats and everything you need is provided.
Should I eat before the class?
Please avoid a heavy meal two hours before class. Keep hydrated and have a light snack as needed. Water, tea and biscuits are provided.
I am worried about my age and level of fitness.
This is not a problem – you will be working within your limits and there is no competition. Pregnant women of all ages and levels of fitness benefit from the classes and make new friends.
My partner would like to be involved.
The yoga for pregnancy classes are for women, but your partner is welcome to come with you. Both studios have comfortable waiting areas and provide refreshments. There will be an opportunity to attend a birth preparation workshop where birthing partners are welcome. You will be given more details of these during the course.
Why do I have to commit to so many classes – can I just come and ‘drop in’.
When you join you will be reserving a space until the birth of your baby. The classes are designed to support you during your pregnancy and will be progressive. You will be paying every eight weeks up till your due date (we will adjust payment nearer to the birth). Please talk to me if you wish to discuss other payment options.
What can I do after the birth?
Firstly, please let us know your news! You will be able to join Yoga Tone approximately six weeks after birth. This runs after the Saturday Yoga for pregnancy class and is a good place to catch up with your friends.
I need some help.
If you have any health concerns please contact your midwife or GP. Yoga for pregnancy is not a substitute for professional advice and support. Please let me know if you have any medical problems or changes during your pregnancy.
